*Note – At the time the survey was sent out, administratively the decision was made to not survey students. However, we had seven students specifically request the survey as members of the school community, therefore made available to them.

  The last day of school will be May 27th with dismissal at 1:15 PM.

 

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Kindergarten Grandparent Day

  26 Kindergarten students hosted 50 guests and grandparents the afternoon of Friday, May 6th. We enjoyed reading, writing, practicing place value, and adding with "jewels". Guests viewed samples of videos used in phonics and reading on our SmartBoard. After snacks and recess, students ended the day playing " I have___, Who has___?" with their reading words. Special thanks to Mr. Kem and Mr. Mennenoh for showing our guests what they teach to kindergartners in P.E. and music. 

 

ATHLETICS

Viqueen Track

  The girls track team competed at Mount Ayr on Thursday evening.  The following events finished in 2nd place: Chelsea Weis-Long Jump; the Shuttle Hurdle team of Ally Focht, Madison Franzen, Abbi Adams, Chelsea Weis; and the Sprint Medley team of Abbi Adams, Devin Druivenga, Shelby Brockshus, and Ashley Reese. 3rd place finishers included: the 4x200 team of Chelsea Weis, Devin Druivenga, Ashley Reese, and Abbi Adams; the 4x100 team of Ally Focht, Devin Druivenga, Shelby Brockshus and Abbi Adams; and the 4x400 team of Ally Focht, Mallorie Wookey, Ashley Reese, and Shelby Brockshus. Devin Druivenga finished 4th in the Discus and Shelby Brockshus finished 4th in the 400 with a personal best 1:06.87. We also had several events that finished 6th overall: Ally Focht-Long Jump; Nicole Graham-3000; the Distance Medley team of Madison Franzen, Baylee Gibbs, Nicole Graham, and Jody Vanderholm; Chelsea Weis-100 Hurdles; and Mallorie Wookey 800.  The team finished with 55 total points.

  The Viqueens were scheduled to run at Fremont-Mills on Monday, May 9th but the meet was cancelled. The girls competed in the Regional Meet at Griswold last night. Full results will be in the bulletin next week.

Viking Track

  The Vikings competed against 11 other 1A schools last night in Griswold in the District Track Meet. The first place finishers from each of the 12 districts earn a bid to the state meet, which is held next Thursday-Saturday. The next 12 best performances across the state in each event will qualify for the last 12 spots. The top 24 qualifiers will be posted on the Iowa High School Athletic Association's website by some time on Friday, May 13th

Junior High Girls Track

  The Stanton Junior High girls track team competed at the Timberwolf Junior High meet on Friday, May 6th in Corning. The Viqueens team placed 5th overall out of the 9-team field. Anika Wenstrand placed 4th in the high jump and Tara Peterson placed 5th in the long jump.

  The shuttle hurdle relay team of (Devin Isaacson, Brooke Adams, Hope Ogletree and Tara Peterson) placed 1st. The Sprint Medley team (Hope Ogletree, Faith Ogletree, Kami Tibben and Tara Peterson) placed 1st with a season best time of 2:07.29. The 4 x 100 team (Kami Tibben, Hope Ogletree, Brooke Adams, Tara Peterson) placed 3rd with a season best of 58.65. The 4 x 200 team (Devin Isaacson, Anika Wenstrand, Faith Ogletree, Kami Tibben ) placed 4th overall with a season best time of 2:09.68. The 4 x 400 team (Anika

Wenstrand, Kaitylnn Thomas, Emily Hammargren, Stormy Strough) placed 5th. Brooklyn Adams placed 2nd in the 200 hurdles with a personal best of 34.88 and Devin Isaacson placed 6th in the 100 hurdles.Stormy Strough placed 5th in the 400 dash. Great job girls!    

  The team was scheduled to compete in Essex on Tuesday but the meet was canceled due to wet conditions. The team will wrap up their season tonight as they compete in the Junior High Conference Track Meet at Fremont-Mills.

Junior High Boys Track

  Junior high boys track took home 3rd place in the Timberwolf Junior High Invite this past Friday.The team finished only behind Mount Ayr and Southwest Valley. Keygan Day had one of the most exciting races of the night by winning the mile by only 1 millisecond. He ran a 5:19 mile which has to be the best in the conference as well as possibly one of the best in the state for an 8th grader. The 4x100 ran a 54:51, 4x200 1:56, 4x400 5:27, Sprint med 2:04. It was great to have most of our runners finish with their best times of the season as well as the addition of Charles McCusker. The last meet of the season is going to be at Fremont-Mills tonight and we hope to see you all there!   

 

GUIDANCE

Class Schedules for Next Year

  All class schedules for next year for students currently in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades need to be turned in as soon as possible. These schedules need to be signed by parents, so if you haven’t seen your child’s schedule for next year, please ask them about it!

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PTSO Meeting

  The PTSO will be having a meeting on Tuesday, May 17th, at 5:15 PM in the high school library. Anyone is welcome to attend. If you would like to be included in our email list please send a message to ptso@stantonschools.com. Thank you to the school and everyone in the community for supporting our projects during the 2015/16 school year!

After School Bible Club

  Last Wednesday was the last day of After School Bible Club for this school year. Thank you to all who helped make it a great year. Your help was much appreciated.

Shoot-It Basketball Academy comes to the Viking Center in June!

  The Viking Center will be hosting a summer basketball shooting camp this upcoming June! The Shoot-It Basketball Academy will be taking place at the Viking Center each Thursday in the month of June (6/2, 6/9, 6/16 and 6/23). Students in grades 4-12 (grade this coming fall) will have the chance to learn the 4 phase shooting program starting with basic fundamentals and advancing all the way to a competitive shooting “league”. The academy will be led by basketball expert Doug Diers, who operates his academy throughout the state of Iowa, reaching thousands of youth each year!
