ATHLETICS

Thank You to our Basketball Parents

Our basketball parents planned and prepared a potato bar for the Clarinda Academy and Stanton basketball players after their games on Tuesday night. Spearheading the effort were Nancy Lindgren and Kelly Sorensen. Several others helped in the kitchen to make this an event that was very appreciated by all.

Viqueen Basketball

The Stanton Varsity girls basketball team achieved another conference victory on Thursday, December 10th as they beat Nishnabotna 44-40. Stanton was up 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, then trailed 19-21 at half. They were down 29-32 to start the fourth quarter but they used their defensive pressure and looked to attack the basket offensively to attain the 44-40 victory. Chelsea Weis led the Viqueens with 19 points. Jody Vanderholm added 14 points and Devin Druivenga chipped in 6 points. Ally Focht scored 4 points for Stanton and Nicole Graham added one point.

The team looked to continue their conference win streak into Friday as they travelled to Sidney. Stanton jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but the girls had a difficult time scoring the remainder of the first quarter. The Viqueens were down 5-14 to start the second quarter but they worked to cut the deficit to 17-20 at halftime. The girls continued to battle in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but Sidney was able to hold on to a 38-34 win over Stanton. Chelsea Weis led the team with 15 points and 3 assists, and Jody Vanderholm added 8 points and 14 rebounds. Devin Druivenga added 4 points and 3 steals, Nicole Graham chipped in 3 points and 13 rebounds, while Ally Focht and Savanna Moffett each added 2 points for Stanton.

Stanton returned home to host Clarinda Academy on Tuesday, December 15th. The Viqueens used their full court pressure and really worked to attack the basket on offense to help them jump out to a 47-12 lead at halftime. They finished with a 67-16 win and got some great minutes from the entire team. Four Viqueens finished in double figures: Chelsea Weis scored 20 points, Devin Druivenga added 15, Ally Focht finished with 11, and Jody Vanderholm scored 10 points. Nicole Graham added 6 points, Savanna Moffett finished with 3, and Hallie Lancaster scored 2 points. The team will return to action tonight as they travel to East Mills. They will play their last game before the Christmas break on Monday, December 21st when they travel to Griswold. The Viqueens are now 4-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Viking Basketball

The boys continued their winning ways vs Sidney and Clarinda Academy. The Vikings beat Sidney 58-39. We got off to a great start with a 22-3 first quarter to get our 3rd conference win and 4th win overall. Balanced scoring again led the way. On Tuesday, December 15th, the boys defeated Clarinda Academy 92-35 at home. The Vikings played great defense and were able to shoot the ball very well from inside and out to register their biggest offensive output in several years. We are 5-0 in the conference and 6-0 overall on the season. The Vikes travel to Malvern to take on East Mills tonight.

JV Girls Basketball

The JV girls basketball team played 2 quarters at Nishnabotna on Thursday, December 10th. The Viqueens lost 33-14. Hallie Lancaster had 5 points, Shelby Brockshus finished with 3 points, while Ashley Reese, Hannah Elwood, and Savanna Moffett each had 2 points. The JV team will return to action on December 21st at Griswold.  They will play after the varsity girls game that night.

Junior High Boys Basketball

The Junior High boys basketball teams have had so many great showings so far this year. The A team has only lost 1 game this year and that was against Bedford at the beginning of year. These boys have proven to be great competitors and are consistently rebounding the ball. They had a tough test against Lenox but still came out victorious by a score of 39-25. We look to continue to rebound the ball and play tough, competitive defense. The B team has many new faces to the game and to the team. They are consistently learning and becoming better every single day. The sport of basketball is a sport with many different concepts, strategies, and skills needed to be successful so in order to have success you need time to develop as a player. These boys have been a fun group to work with and I look forward to their continuous success and development as basketball players.

More Viqueen Volleyball Post-Season Honors

Congratulations to Chelsea Weis, Ally Focht and Devin Druivenga for being named to the All-Western Iowa volleyball team. Chelsea was named to the First Team. Ally and Devin were named to the Honorable Mention team. Congratulations girls!
