Calendar Changes

Last Day of School

The last day of school will be Friday, June 1st, with an early dismissal at 1:05/1:15 PM.  There WILL ALSO BE an early dismissal on Wednesday, May 23rd.  There WILL NOT be an early dismissal on Friday, May 25th or Wednesday, May 30th.

 

Scholarship & Awards Day

The date of the Scholarship & Awards Day will now be Thursday, May 10th, at

12:15 PM.

 

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Enchanted Forest–Junior/Senior Prom

  The Junior Class has been busy planning the big night of prom for the past several months. This year’s theme is Enchanted Forest.  Prom will be held on Saturday evening, April 28th. Everyone is invited to watch walk-in which will commence at 6:30 PM. Walk-in will be held in the upper parking area near the high school building entrance. There will be bleachers to accommodate the on-lookers but please feel welcome to bring a lawn chair to watch as the Juniors and Seniors and their dates make their entrance into the school. Julie Strickland of Strickland Photography will take pictures beginning at 4:00 PM that afternoon. Students will sign up in the office for a time. We ask that no parents, siblings or friends are in the picture area when the couples are being photographed. No other picture taking is permitted at that time. We ask that the juniors and seniors and their guests visit the care center at 5:30 PM. The meal will be served at approximately 7:15 PM with the dance to begin at 8:30 PM. We ask that only prom-goers and invited guests are in the concourse/gym area after the walk-in. If you want to take pictures of your child/date, please do so prior to this time. After-prom activities will conclude the evening. The Juniors and Seniors are looking forward to a fun-filled and safe evening and hope to see you all at walk-in!

Stanton Solo/Ensemble Contest Results

  Ten students from the Stanton Music Department traveled to Lenox on Saturday, April 14th, to participate in the IHSMA State Solo and Ensemble Contest. The students had a great learning experience and represented our school and community well! The following are results from the day:

ATHLETICS

2nd Annual Viking-Viqueen Golf Scramble

  We hope you're exited for Stanton's 2nd Annual Viking-Viqueen Golf Scramble! Thank you for everyone's support last year. It was such a successful event. We've already done a lot of prep work, but we need your continued support, so here are the event details:

Proceeds will support Stanton Athletics

No one under the age of 18 will be permitted to play

4-Person Scramble:

Mixed teams (men/women) are encouraged.

Team entry fees - $120.00 ($30.00 per golfer)

Tournament includes: 9 holes w/ Cart, post tournament meal, and prizes.

Another 9-holes of competitive team play is available free-of-charge.

On-course fundraising games can be purchased at registration.

Raffle tickets will be sold during the tournament.

Winners will be drawn during dinner.

Viqueens

  The Viqueen track team traveled to Clarinda Monday, April 16th, and came away scoring 35 team points which compared favorably with other 1A schools in the meet. The team scoring was dominated by the larger schools however the competition was welcome as the Queens continue to prepare for conference and district competition in May. Even though placing in events was at a premium for the Queens there were some bright spots.

Tara Peterson placed 5th in the 400m 1:05.4 and a 1st place in the 400m hurdles 1:12.6, both times were consistent with her best times this year.

Relays that continue to score and improve times include:

800 Sprint Medley 3rd place 2:01.3

4 x 100 6th place 58.42

Shuttle Hurdles 3rd 1:18.03 

Vikings

  The Varsity boys were in action again Monday after nearly a 3 week break since their first meet. Despite a cold night and great competition, the Vikings scored 35 points as a team. The team was in Hamburg last night for the Sidney Cowboy Invitational and results can be found on Aspimeetz.com and overall season stats by school, conference, state qualifying site can be found on quikstatsiowa.com.  Next week the Vikings are scheduled to compete in Essex on Monday, Tabor on Tuesday, and Griswold on Thursday. Go Vikings and Viqueens!

Junior High Girls Track

  The Stanton Junior High girls track team competed in their third track meet of the season as they traveled to Hamburg for a meet hosted by Sidney on Monday, April 16th. The team of nine girls finished in fourth place out of the eight teams participating and there was just a one point difference between the third and fourth place teams. Jenna Stephens threw the shot put to a second place finish (25’3”) and also placed fourth in the discus event with a toss of 57’1”.  Allie Sandin placed second in the high jump with 4’4”. In the long jump, Marleigh Johnson out-jumped the competition to win the event with a leap of 12’7”.

  The shuttle hurdle relay team (Marleigh Johnson, Brooklyn Silva, Abby Burke and Allie Sandin) was victorious for the third consecutive meet with a first place finish and a new personal best time of 1:23.87 Marleigh Johnson placed first in the 200 m hurdles with a time of 35.34. In the 100 meter dash, Addison Olson placed sixth overall.  In the 800, Allie Sandin placed third with a time of 3:03.44. The Sprint Medley team of Abby Burke, Addison Olson, Brooklyn Silva and Emily Adams placed second out of six teams with a time of 2:35.91.  The 4 x 100 team of Marleigh Johnson, Abby Burke, Brooklyn Silva and Allie Sandin placed fourth with a time of 1:07.85. The 4 x 200 team (Ashley Henneman, Jenna Stephens, Bethany Goodemote and Emily Adams) placed fifth (2:43.31) and the Distance Medley team of (Jenna Stephens, Mackenzie Rocha, Emily Adams and Bethany Goodemote) placed fifth (6:33) on the evening. The girls have a busy week next week as they travel to Hamburg again on Tuesday, April 24th, and Essex on Thursday, April 26th. Great job girls!

Junior High Boys Track

  The Junior High boys track team competed this week at Hamburg for the Sidney track meet. The boys put in a great effort despite the cold temperatures and were able to bring home a 1st place trophy. The 1st place finish is their second of the young season and they are looking forward to continuing to improve individual times and stay competitive with team points. 1st place finishes at the meet were Jack Roberts (High Jump), Logan Roberts (400m), Levi Martin (800&1600m), 800 Medley Relay of Jonan Wookey, Damian Meek, John Peterson, and Logan Roberts, 4x200 Relay of Joshua Martin, Jonan Wookey, Damian Meek, and John Peterson, and the 4x400 Relay of John Peterson, Carter Johnson, Logan Roberts, and Jack Roberts. We will continue competition next week with meets at Hamburg (4/24) and Essex (4/26).

Montgomery County Pheasants Forever Scholarship - due April 27

Good Samaritan Society Healthcare or Spiritual Ministries Scholarship

-Application MUST BE RECEIVED by April 30

Criteria for Eligibility:

  1. High School Senior that is graduating in the 2017/2018 academic school year
    Accepted into a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing/related field or in religion/spiritual ministries.  Students pursuing C.N.A. certification are also eligible to apply.

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship – May 1

-Must be of the Protestant

-Must be a resident of the State of Iowa

-Must be a full-time student at the University of Iowa

Robert D. Blue Scholarship - due May 10 - Online

-The applicant must be an Iowa resident planning to attend an Iowa college/university during the 2016-2017 school year.

-The applicant can be a current high school senior or someone already enrolled in a college/university.

-Select an individual from your community (not a family member) that has demonstrated the responsibilities of being a citizen of a community. Write a 500-word essay on what this individual has done for his/her community.

-Each applicant is "graded" upon their high school GPA, financial need, references, and their essay.

Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholarship - June 15
To be considered for the Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholarship Program, applicants must:

* Have completed high school or plan to complete high school by spring of 2017        with plans to enroll at a non-profit post-secondary institution by fall of 2017

*   exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical   program at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States

*Demonstrate critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)

*Demonstrate perseverance in overcoming adversity

*Be involved in community service activities

*Be 30 years old or younger

*Be a United States citizen

2017 Balanced Man Scholarship – due July 31

Preschool Registration

  Preschool registration for next year is planned for Thursday, May 3rd, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Children must be four years old on or before September 15, 2018.

Pool Manager, Lifeguards, and Water Safety Instructor Needed

  The City of Villisca is currently accepting applications for a Pool Manager, Lifeguards, and a Water Safety Instructor for the 2018 season. Please visit Villisca City Hall to complete an application or contact Kadee Myers, City Clerk, at (712) 826-2282.
