STANTON COMMUNITY SCHOOL BULLETIN MAY 19, 2017

Calendar Changes

The last day of school will be Tuesday, May 30th, with an early dismissal at 1:05/1:15 PM.  There will also be an early dismissal on Wednesday, May 24th.  There WILL NOT be an early dismissal on Friday, May 26th.

 

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

8th Grade Graduation

  Eighth grade graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd at 7:00 PM in the Stanton Schools Gymnasium. Our guest speaker this year will be Mr. Engstrand, a long-time component of the Stanton Community School System. 

  Parents: if you are participating in the reception at school, you will be able to set up your tables after school on May 23rd. Please try to have them set up by 6:30 PM. Students will need to be at school by 6:30 PM to practice their songs. Please plan accordingly.

Talent Show

  There will be a Talent Show for 3rd-5th grade in the gym on Thursday, May 25th, at 8:45 AM. This is open to the public. (It should last about 45 minutes.)

Elementary Awards Program

  The elementary awards program will be held on Tuesday, May 30th, beginning at 8:45 AM in the concourse area.  A variety of awards will be presented to the elementary students including perfect attendance awards and accelerated reading awards.

Elementary Fun Day

  Elementary Fun Day will be Tuesday, May 23rd from 12:00-3:00 PM. Please send a water bottle (labeled) and sunscreen for your child. The rain date will be Friday, May 26th. Please wear tennis shoes. (No boots or sandals.) Please have them dress by color for their grade level. K-blue, 1st-red, 2nd-white, 3rd-green, 4th-purple, 5th-pink. 

 

ATHLETICS

1st Annual Viking-Viqueen Golf Scramble

  Stanton will be hosting their 1st Annual Viking-Viqueen Golf Scramble on Saturday, July 8th, at the Villisca Country Club.

This is a 4-person scramble. Mixed teams are encouraged. Team entry fee is $120 ($30 per golfer), which includes 18 holes w/ cart, post tournament meal, and prizes. This year the proceeds will benefit the girls and boys basketball programs. Please see the signup sheet on stantonschools.com for more information. Viking Track

  The regular season has ended and the team competed and performed well at the State-Qualifying meet. Drake Johnson qualified for the state meet in the 400 low hurdles and will compete today at 11:20 AM. Look for updates on the school's Facebook page for his results. The team has set the school record in the 800M sprint medley with a time of 1:41.27.

  Team uniforms and sweats were collected Monday morning between 6:30 and 7:30. Numerous athletes have yet to turn them in. Please double check with your son to make sure this being done ASAP. I will not sign them out at the end of the school year without having all of it turned in.

 

 

  Thank you for all of the positive support and comments throughout the season! I look forward to measuring our gains in the weight room next week! So far, the lowest gain from someone following the 12-week program has been 170 lbs!

Junior High Girls Track

  The Stanton Junior High girls track team completed their 2017 season at the Corner Conference track meet at Fremont-Mills on Friday night, May 12th. The weather was perfect and the team set several personal best finishes for the season. The Viqueens won the meet with a total of 131.50 points! Seven other conference teams participated.  Nicole Vorhies earned a personal best in the discus with a throw of 88-09 to win the event! Olivia Soar followed in 4th place with a throw of 65-01. Tara Peterson set a new personal best of 14-11 in the long jump for a first place finish and Hope Ogletree followed in 4th place with her personal best jump of her career with a 12-08.75. Brook Adams earned a 4th place finish in the high jump after clearing 4-04 which is her personal best. Faith Ogletree placed 4th in the shot put with a 24-08 and Olivia Soar followed in 5th place with a 23-01 throw.  

  The Sprint Medley team (Faith Ogletree, Faythe Goodman, Nicole Vorhies, and Hope Ogletree) placed 1st with their personal best showing of the season of 2:12.66. The 4 x 100 team (Brook Adams, Faith Ogletree, Allie Sandin, and Hope Ogletree) placed 2nd with a time of 59.79. The 4 x 200 team (Allie Sandin, Nicole Vorhies, Faythe Goodman, and Faith Ogletree) placed 2nd in 2:09.84. The shuttle hurdle relay team of (Nicole Vorhies, Bethany Goodamote, Olivia Soar, and Faythe Goodman) placed 2nd in the event. Tara Peterson swept the field in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.18 and also took won the 400 dash (1:03.58). Tara completed in the 800 run for the first time this season and came across the finish in 1st place with a 2:42.92. Brook Adams raced to a finish line battle in the 200 dash to take the win in 30.05 and placed a close 2nd in the 200 hurdle event with a 33.66. Hope Ogletree came across the finish line in 3rd place in the 100 m dash with a time of 14.65. In her first time in the mile event, Allie Sandin placed 3rd with a run of 6:26.39.    

  Congratulations on a very successful season and the Corner Conference Championship and a huge “Thank You” to all who came to the meets and supported the team during the season!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Babysitter Workshop

  Montgomery County Extension is offering a Babysitter Workshop on Friday June 2nd from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM. This workshop is offered to students having just completed 5th grade to 11th grade. Pre-registration is required by May 26th. Cost of workshop is $10 per person. Local Author

  “Who were the first Americans?” Come hear local author, Richard Longbow, who will give a presentation and book signing at 10:00 AM at the Stanton Public Library on Saturday, May 27th. He will discuss his recently published book “Who Were The First Americans” and also display pertinent artifacts. Refreshments will served at the conclusion.

The Stanton Public Library Launches Summer Reading Program

  The 2017 Summer Reading Program, “Build a Better World”, is open to preschool age through adults, with prize drawings and more. You may register for the reading program any time after the last day of school at the library or go online to www.stanton.lib.ia.us and click the summer reading tab and then register online link. The summer reading program begins May 31st and runs until July 7th. Story Time will be Tuesday from 1:00 Pm to 1:45 PM beginning June 6th. Collect Pop Tabs-Help Ronald McDonald House   

  Virginia Abraham is collecting pop, soup, etc tabs to help the Ronald McDonald House. You may help by collecting them and dropping them off at the 216 Broad Ave., Stanton, or calling her at 829-2433. Virginia will be taking the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in August. This program is an easy way for people of all ages to support Ronald McDonald House and know they are making a difference for families. Thank you to all who have contributed to this project.

Swedish School

  Students who have completed 1st grade (or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th), it’s time to sign up for Swedish School! It will be held this year Monday through Friday, June 12th–16th, 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon, at the Stanton Swedish Heritage Center, 410 Hilltop Avenue.

  There will be Swedish songs and dances, culture, crafts, games, snacks, and lots of fun!  Students will then perform at the Midsommar celebration at the Center on Saturday evening, June 17th.
