SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
8th Grade Graduation
Eighth grade graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd at 7:00 PM in the Stanton Schools Gymnasium. Our guest speaker this year will be Mr. Engstrand, a long-time component of the Stanton Community School System.
Parents: if you are participating in the reception at school, you will be able to set up your tables after school on May 23rd. Please try to have them set up by 6:30 PM. Students will need to be at school by 6:30 PM to practice their songs. Please plan accordingly.

Elementary Awards Program
The elementary awards program will be held on Tuesday, May 30th, beginning at 8:45 AM in the concourse area. A variety of awards will be presented to the elementary students including perfect attendance awards and accelerated reading awards.
Swedish School
Students who have completed 1st grade (or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th), it’s time to sign up for Swedish School! It will be held this year Monday through Friday, June 12th–16th, 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon, at the Stanton Swedish Heritage Center, 410 Hilltop Avenue.
There will be Swedish songs and dances, culture, crafts, games, snacks, and lots of fun! Students will then perform at the Midsommar celebration at the Center on Saturday evening, June 17th.

ATHLETICS
Junior High Girls Track
The Stanton Junior High girls track team traveled to Corning on Friday to participate in the Timberwolf Junior High Invitational. The team participated in all of their field events and only a few select running events since they participated in a track meet the following day. Tara Peterson placed first in the long jump with a leap of 13’8 ½”. Brook Adams and Allie Sandin tied for fifth place in the high jump with 4’. Olivia Soar placed fifth in the shot put event with a throw of 24’ 4 3/4”(personal best this season). In the discus event, Olivia Soar threw a 71’4” for third place and Nicole Vorhies placed fifth with a 67’4 3.4” throw. The girls faired extremely well in their running events. Brook Adams placed first in the 200 dash with a 28.71 and Tara Peterson placed first in the 100 hurdles with her best time of the season of 17.25. The 4 x 200 team (Nicole Vorhies, Allie Sandin, Faythe Goodman and Faith Ogletree) placed second with their best time of the season 2:08.32. The 4 x 100 team of (Brook Adams, Hope Ogletree, Faith Ogletree, and Tara Peterson) set a new meet record with a winning time of 56.20 and the shuttle hurdle relay team (Brook Adams, Allie Sandin, Hope Oglegree, and Tara Peterson) set a new meet record for first place with 1:17.04 (their fastest time in that event this season).
On Saturday, May 6th, the team traveled to Ankeny to participate in the Mike Henderson Junior High State Track meet. In the 7th grade small school high jump, Allie Sandin tied her personal best jump of the season with 4’. In the 400 dash, Bethany Goodemote ran her best time of the season with a 1:33.22 and also put in a strong performance in the 800. In the 8th grade small school field events, Tara Peterson leapt to her personal best of the season with a 14’6 1.2” placing her in 11th and Hope Ogletree jumped 12’6” in that event
Nicole Vorhies placed 16th in the discus with Olivia Soar placing 20th. In the shot put, Olivia Soar placed 27th and Faith Ogletree placed 28th. Brook Adams also competed in the high jump event. In running events, the 4 x 100 team of Allie Sandin, Brook Adams, Faith Ogletree, and Faythe Goodman ran their best time of the season with a 59.47 to place 13th out of 26 teams.The Sprint Medley team (Faith O., Faythe G., Nicole and Hope) also raced to their best time of the season with a 2:14.09 for 12th out of 25 teams. The 4 x 200 team (Allie, Faythe, Faith and Nicole) placed 17th out of the 26 team field. The Shuttle Hurdle relay team (Brook, Allie, Hope, Tara) medaled in 5th place with a time of 1:17.77 in the 15 team field. Brook placed 8th out of 31 competitors in the 200 hurdles. Tara medaled in fourth in the 100 hurdle event of 44 girls and medaled in second place in the 400 with a time of 1:03.71 in the 19 girl field. There were 1097 entries in this meet on Saturday making it the largest girls’ track meet in the state of Iowa. The girls enjoyed the experience and had a great time representing their team! Thank you to everyone who traveled to Ankeny to support the team on Saturday! The team will be in action for their last meet of the season on Friday, May 12th, when they travel to Tabor for the Corner Conference junior high meet which will begin at 4:00 PM.
Junior High Boys Track
The Stanton Junior High boys track team traveled to Corning on Friday to participate in the Timberwolf Junior High Invitational. The team participated in all of their field events and only a few chosen running events due to our participation in the Mike Henderson State Track Meet that they participated in the following day. Jack Roberts. placed 1st in the high jump with a soar of 5’2”, his personal best! In running events the boys did a nice job as well. Slade Graham ran his personal best time of 34.0 in the 200 hurdles and Tre Strough also had a personal best of 33.68 in the 200-hurdles. Placing 5th and running a personal best time, the 4X100 team (Carter Johnson, Jack Roberts, Colby Royal, and Griffin Anderson) ran a time of 56.01. The 4X200 team (Rylan Houston, John Peterson, Logan Roberts, and Ransom Mascher) ran a time of 2:07.54.The 800-Sprint Medley Relay team (Griffin Anderson, Rylan Houston, Tre Strough, and Jack Roberts) placed 5th running a time of 2:06.90.The 1600-Distance Medley Relay team (Colby Royal, Carter Johnson, Logan Roberts, Levi Martin) placed 2nd running a time of 4:40.23.
The Stanton Junior High boys traveled to Ames to participate in the Mike Henderson Junior High State Track meet on Saturday, May 6th.They did an excellent job representing the Stanton Vikings. In the 7th grade small division, Jack Roberts tied for 4th place jumping 4’ 8”. The 1600 distance medley team, consisting of Carter Johnson, Logan Roberts, Jack Roberts, and Levi Martin placed 5th in the 7th grade small division running a personal best time of 4:34.04. Levi Martin placed 5th in the 1600 meter run with a personal-best time of 5:30.11. Also competing in the 7th grade small division was Slade Graham in the 200 hurdles, Ransom Mascher and John Peterson in the 200-meter dash, Carter Johnson in the long jump. In the 8th grade small division Colby Royal participated in the high jump and 100 meter hurdles, Rylan Houston in long jump, the 8th grade shuttle hurdle (Carter Johnson, Slade Graham, Colby Royal, and Griffin Anderson), the 4X200 relay (Rylan Houston, Slade Graham, Ransom Mascher, John Peterson, Tre Strough, Logan Roberts), and the 800 sprint medley team (Griffin Anderson, Rylan Houston, Jack Roberts, and Tre Strough). Kenny Herbert threw his personal best discus throw of 87’. Tre Strough and Kenny Herbert also threw shot put.
The Mike Henderson Junior High State Track meet has been going on since 2005 for the boys. This year’s participation was up 26% from previous years. At least 9 meet records were broken this year. The Stanton Junior High boys team did an excellent job representing Stanton and I couldn’t be prouder of their performance and representation of our community. Thank you to everyone who traveled to Ames High School to cheer on the team Saturday.
GUIDANCE
8th Grade Parent and Student Meeting
Eighth grade students and parents will have a meeting on May 15th in the high school library at 5:30 PM. We will schedule classes for ninth grade and look at long range planning for high school.

Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholarship - June 15, 2017
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholarship Program, applicants must:
*Have completed high school or plan to complete high school by spring of 2017 with plans to enroll at a non-profit post-secondary institution by fall of 2017
* exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical program at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the United States
*Demonstrate critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)
*Demonstrate perseverance in overcoming adversity
*Be involved in community service activities
*Be 30 years old or younger
*Be a United States citizen

Babysitter Workshop
Montgomery County Extension is offering a Babysitter Workshop on Friday June 2nd from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM. This workshop is offered to students having just completed 5th grade to 11th grade. Pre-registration is required by May 26th. Cost of workshop is $10 per person. Local Author
“Who were the first Americans?” Come hear local author, Richard Longbow, who will give a presentation and book signing at 10:00 AM at the Stanton Public Library on Saturday, May 27th. He will discuss his recently published book “Who Were The First Americans” and also display pertinent artifacts. Refreshments will served at the conclusion.
