STANTON COMMUNITY SCHOOL BULLETIN DECEMBER 4, 2015

PICK UP ZONE

All STUDENTS, Kindergarten-12th, who are picked up after school are to be picked up in the “Pick Up Zone” upon dismissal. We ask that parents DO NOT park in the staff parking area or in front of the school to pick up their student. ALL parents are asked to use the drive that is west of the Viking Center and proceed around the back of the Viking Center and then pull in to the “Pick Up Zone” which is located in the drive between the High School building and the Viking Center.  Safety is our first priority for all of our students and it is for safety reasons that we ask parents to follow the above guidelines. Thank you for your understanding!

5th Grade Field Trip

The 5th grade class went to Anderson Conservation on Tuesday, November 24th. It was a great day full of learning and exploring! The students learned about water quality and how to be responsible for the future of the Earth. We also became water engineers and developed a plan, which we later tested with the water table model. The afternoon was spent outside, enjoying the nice fall day. The class also discussed how our actions impact Iowa prairies. We made a campfire, learned more about how to respect the land, and had a tasty lunch. We finished the day with geocaching, a game of predator vs. prey, and learning about animal population. The fifth grade class would like to thank Michael Pastore for helping us that day! Thank you Deb Karwal for such an AMAZING day!!

Free Homework Help

The Viking Center is offering free homework help again this year after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-5:00. If your child is planning to go there after school, they need to sign up in the office that morning.

ATHLETICS

Viqueen Basketball

On Tuesday, November 24th, the varsity girls basketball team opened season play at home against a very tough Bedford team, ranked #5 in class 1A. The Viqueens got off to a good start and were up 6-5 halfway through the first quarter. From that point, Bedford used their full court pressure to force us into turnovers and held us scoreless for about 10 minutes. The Bulldogs took a 35-11 lead into halftime. The Viqueens played tough and never gave up through the second half, but we were unable to cut into the lead that Bedford had created in the second quarter. Bedford ended up defeating Stanton 65-39. Leading the way for the Viqueens was Jody Vanderholm who finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Devin Druivenga and Chelsea Weis added 8 points and 7 points respectively. Nicole Graham finished with 6 points, Ally Focht added 5 points and 8 rebounds, and Savanna Moffett finished with 3 points on the night.  Druivenga and Weis each had 3 assists to lead the team.

The Stanton Viqueens opened conference play on Tuesday, December 1st,  as they hosted Essex. The Viqueens opened the game with a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, it was a back and forth battle and the team headed to the locker room down 17-19 at the half. In the second half, Essex was able to outscore the Viqueens 20-13 to go on and beat Stanton 39-30. Chelsea Weis and Jody Vanderholm each recorded double-doubles for the Viqueens. Weis finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Vanderholm scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds on the night. Nicole Graham scored 4 points, Devin Druivenga finished with 2 points, and Savanna Moffett scored 1 point for Stanton. Ally Focht also finished with 6 rebounds and 5 assists.  The Viqueens loss puts them at 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. They continue with varsity action tonight as they travel to South Page. The Viqueens will return home next Tuesday evening to host Heartland Christian.

Viking Basketball

The Vikings have started off on a positive note for the 15-16 season. They had a great team performance vs Essex coming out on top, 71-42.  They passed the ball very well and had 4 in double figures for scoring and our defense did a good job of making Essex work pretty hard for their shots. A good way to start off the season and the conference season. Essex will have a solid year so having the result we did was very encouraging.

JV Girls Basketball

The JV girls basketball team opened play on Tuesday, November 24th, with a 21-3 loss to Bedford in 2 quarters of play. On Tuesday, December 1st, the JV squad showed a lot of improvement to gain a 15-7 victory (2 quarters) over the Essex Trojans. Ashley Reese led the JV team with 6 points while Shelby Brockshus chipped in 4 points, Savanna Moffett added 3 points and Hallie Lancaster finished with 2 points. The JV girls will return to face Nishnabotna on Thursday, December 10th.

JV Boys Basketball

The JV Boys Basketball team started their season off with a 40-34 victory over the Essex Trojans Tuesday night. The Vikings were led by Freshmen Donnie Weis and Drake Johnson with contributions from a host of other Vikings. The JV basketball has been working hard to develop its youthful roster in all areas of the game. As the season continues we are looking for increased contributions from

the freshman as they develop. The JV Boys will be in action Thursday night as they host Riverside and will travel to South Page on Friday. Thank you to all the parents for their support! GO VIKINGS!

Viqueen Volleyball Post-Season Honors

Congratulations to Ally Focht and Chelsea Weis who were recently named to the IGCA All-District 1A volleyball team. Chelsea Weis was also recognized as a Western Iowa Honorable Mention All-State team member. Congratulations Ally and Chelsea-we are all very proud of you!

Junior High Girls Basketball

The junior high girls team is continuing to learn that “together we are better.” We had our season opener with the Bedford Bulldogs. The A team battled all four quarters, but lost 14-20. The B team worked just as hard, but finished with a loss of 11-26.The Viqueens played East Mills and showed great improvement with rebounding. Stanton won the A game with a three point shot, 36-26.Then we had two quarters with the Wolverines and won 10-5.Tuesday we played Essex for our first away game. The girls won 24-14 and then we had twelve minutes of action with the B team, losing 4-8. Friday we take on the South Page Rebels at 4:30 pm. The team is working very hard! Go Viqueens!!!

Junior High Cheerleaders

We want to wish the Junior High Cheerleaders the best of luck on Saturday, as they travel to Des Moines to compete in the UCA Hawkeye Championship. The girls competing are Captain Devin Isaacson, Kami Tibben, Brooklyn Adams, Emily Hammargren, Faith Ogletree, Tara Peterson, and Alyssa Resh. Good luck girls!
