March 21, 2018, REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The Stanton School District Board of Directors met at 5:30 PM on Monday, March 21, 2018, in the Board Room for a regular session. President Brian Bates called the meeting to order with Directors Paul Vanderholm, and Tom Weis present.  Director Travis Taylor joined the meeting at 5:47 p.m.   Additional attendees were Superintendent Chris Herrick, K-12 Principal Kevin Blunt, and Business Manager Shirley Maxwell.

 

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Director Weis made a motion to approve the agenda with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the minutes of  special board meetings of February 28th and March 14th with a second by Director Weis. The motion carried unanimously.

 

FINANCE REPORTS

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the finance reports as presented with a second by Director Weis.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

CONSIDERATION OF BILLS

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the bills as submitted with a second by Director Taylor.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

PUBLIC HEARING FOR 2017-2018 BUDGET AMENDMENT

President Bates opened the public hearing for the Stanton 2017-2018 budget amendment.  School Business Official, Shirley Maxwell presented the proposed budget amendment that had been published in the Villisca Review/Stanton Viking.  President Bates closed the public hearing.   Director Weis made the motion to approve the Stanton 2017-2018 budget amendment as presented with a second by Director Vanderholm.  The motion carried unanimously. 

 

PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE 2018-2019 BUDGET

President Bates opened the public hearing for the Stanton 2018-2019 budget.  School Business Official, Shirley Maxwell presented the proposed budget that had been published in the Villisca Review/Stanton Viking.  President Bates closed the public hearing.  Director Weis made the motion to approve the Stanton 2018-2019 Budget with a second by Director Vanderholm.  The motion carried unanimously.  The budget total requirements are $5,831,198 at a tax levy rate of 12.48869 per $1,000 taxable valuation.

 

BUDGET GUARANTEE RESOLUTION        

Director Taylor made the motion to approve the resolution that the Board of Directors of Stanton Community School District will levy property tax for fiscal year 2018-2019 for the regular program budget adjustment as allowed under Section 257.14, Code of Iowa with a second by Director Weis.  The motion carried unanimously. 

 

  

TEACHER LEADERSHIP GRANT CHANGES

Instructors Carla Erickson and Susan Peterson addressed the board concerning separating the duties of Instructional Coach, Mentor, and Professional Development Coach. This would allow more teachers to

take Leadership Positions or teachers to take multiple leadership positions. There would continue to be a Technology Coach position.   Director Vanderholm made the motion to accept the proposed plan as presented with a second by Director Taylor.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

APPROVAL OF FY17 AUDIT

School Business Official Shirley Maxwell presented the 2017 audit report.  Director Weis made the motion to approve the 2017 audit as presented with the second by Director Vanderholm.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

CAMERA PROJECT

Supt. Herrick reported that two additional security cameras will be installed in April. 

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Supt. Herrick reported that the legislators have approved a 1.0% increase in State Supplemental Aid for the 2018-2019 school year.  The legislators have also passed SF 455 SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION & EQUITY FUNDING.  However this bill will not create any extra funding for the Stanton School District. 

 

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

·         The PTSO recently held a Family Fun night and they also supplied food for lunch for the Parent Teacher Conference.

·         The Booster Club is donating money to purchase two new tents for the track teams.

·         State Speech competition was held and Stanton students did very well.

o   1)Sam Lindgren-overall 1 for poetry

o   2)Nick Mueller-overall 1 for radio

o   3)Noah Kammerer-overall 2 for Improve

o   4)Alyssa Resh-overall 2 for poetry

·         The High School Track Meet will be held in Griswold on March 29th.

·         Interviews continue for the open math and science positions.

·         Stanton B team placed 4th in the Corner Conference Quiz Bowl.

·         2018-2019 Football schedules have been announced.

·         Principal Blunt presented the list of superintendent interview committee members.

 

Supt. Herrick and Director Weis have been meeting with the Stanton Education Association.

 

Director Weis made the motion to accept the early retirement request and resignation from Bruce Subbert at the end of the 2017-2018 school year with sincere appreciation for his years of service with a second by Director Vanderholm.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made the motion to accept the early retirement request and resignation from Larry Watson at the end of the 2017-2018 school year with sincere appreciation for his years of service with a second by Director Vanderholm.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made the motion to accept the early retirement request and resignation from Lee Haidsiak at the end of the 2017-2018 school year with sincere appreciation for his years of service with a second by Director Taylor.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Vanderholm made the motion to proceed with plans for a school surplus sale with a second by Director Taylor.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made the motion to approve the Educational Service Contracts with SWCC for the 2018-2019 school year.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made the motion to approve the letter request from Essex/South Page for activity sharing for the 2018-2019 season with a second by Director Vanderholm.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

THE NEXT MEETING DATE

The next regular meeting date will be April 18th at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room.   The regular May meeting will be held May 23rd due to Superintendent Interviews. 

 

ADJOURNMENT

President Bates adjourned the meeting at 7:24 PM.
