MAY 17, 2017, REGULAR BOARD MEETING

 

The Stanton School District Board of Directors met at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, in the Board Room for a regular session. President Brian Bates called the meeting to order with Directors Mark Lindgren, Jeff Sorensen, Paul Vanderholm, and Tom Weis present. Additional attendees were Superintendent Chris Herrick, K-12 Principal Kevin Blunt, Business Manager Shirley Maxwell, and Board Secretary Tammy Boyer.

 

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the agenda with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 19, 2017, meeting with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.

 

TRANSPORATION REPORT

The new bus should be arriving before the start of school in August.

 

FINANCE REPORTS

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the finance reports with a second by Director Lindgren.  The motion carried unanimously

 

CONSIDERATION OF BILLS

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve the bills with a second by Director Sorensen.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

OLD BUSINESS

ADA COMPLIANCE RENOVATION PROJECT

A special board meeting/public hearing will be held on May 25, 2017, to approve the bids for the ADA Compliance Renovation Project.

 

ANDERSON PARK LIGHTING PROJECT

Preliminary results for bids are in for the Anderson Park Lighting Project and they range in cost from $135,000.00 to $165,299.00.

 

SUPERINTENDENT UPDATE

LEGISLATIVE SESSION UPDATE

The legislators approved a 1.1% Allowable Growth for schools, approved the Home Rule/Flexibility in Categorical Funding, and dropped the 3rd grade retention requirement.

 

PRINCIPAL UPDATE

The shootaway that the Booster Club donated toward has arrived.  PTSO is working out details for a meal for the students before the end of the school year.  The High School Boys track Sprint Medley and 4 X 400 teams of Will Roberts, Connor Hultman, Chris Jones, and Drake Johnson placed 1st at the Conference meet.  The Junior High Girls track team was the Conference Track Champion .  Nicole Vorhis placed 1st in the Discus, Tara Peterson placed 1st in the Long Jump, 100 Hurdles, 400, and 800, Brook Adams placed 1st in the 200, and the 800 Sprint Medley Relay team of Faythe Goodman, Faith Ogletree, Nicole Vorhies, and Hope Ogletree placed 1st.  The Junior High Boys track 4 X 100 Relay team of Colby Royal, Carter Johnson, Jack Roberts, and Griffin Anderson placed 1st, the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Slade Graham, Ransom Mascher, Logan Roberts, and Tre Strough placed 1st, and Levi Martin placed 1st in the 1600 Run at the Conference meet.  Tim Felton, Deputy Sheriff of Winneshiek County, met with students during the day on May 1st and with over 40 parents/community members in the evening.  He had a good message on social media and good responses from students.  Large Group Music Contest was held on May 5th with the band receiving a II and the choir a III rating.  Prom was held on April 29th with a good meal, dance, and after prom.  Kindergarten Roundup went well with 25 signed up at this time.  Stanton hosted the Art Show for the Conference and it went well.  Drei Hampel and Aiden Graham received Best of Show Awards and Shelby Brockshus received the Paul Clapper Excellence of Art Award.

 

GOOD NEWS

Congratulations to the following:

 

Mr. John Mainquist, Ms. Mabel Rico, and Ms. Whitney Warner who have completed their 2 year required mentor program.

 

Ms. Kenzie Huntley and Kelsie Schmidt for completing year 1 of their 2 year required mentor program.

 

The winners of the Elementary Spelling Bee, Oliver Dykes and Hannah Gibbs, 1st and 2nd grade winners and Anna Peterson, 3rd and 4th grade winner.

 

Coach Jody Driuvenga and the Junior High Girls Track Team on winning the Corner Conference Track Meet.

 

Coach Jeff Grebin and Drake Johnson as Drake qualified for the State 400 Meter Hurdles.

 

Elementary has finished all of their FAST testing and the data looks good and there has been lots of improvement from students.

 

Stanton 4th grade enjoyed their trip to the State Capital Building and Iowa Science Center in Des Moines.

 

The 5th grade class went to Y Camp last Thursday and Friday.  The class had an awesome overnight trip and learned many outdoor skills.

 

The seniors earned over $106,000 in scholarship money for one year and over $289,000 for 4 years.  Over $39,000 was from local and area scholarships.

 

APROVAL OF 2017 GRADUATION CANDIDATES

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve the Class of 2017 for Commencement pending completion of graduation requirements with a second by Director Sorensen.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT UPDATE

Technology Coordinator, Beau Boeye, provided a written report of technology needs of the district for next school year.

 

CUSTODIAL JOB RESPONSIBLITIES

Director Sorensen made a motion to approve the Custodial Job Responsibilities as presented to the board with a second by Director Lindgren.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

CUSTODIAL CONTRACTS FOR 2017-2018

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve a 3% raise on salary package for the head custodian with a second by Director Sorensen.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Sorensen made a motion to approve a 3% raise on salary or $150 per month towards a single/family insurance policy with the Stanton School insurance for the evening custodian with a second by Director Vanderholm.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

SUMMER HELP

Director Weis made a motion to approve Superintendent Herrick to hire summer help with a second by Director Vanderholm.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

RESIGNATION REQUEST

Director Lindgren made a motion to accept the resignation of Ted Marshall, dishwasher, with a second by Director Weis effective immediately. The motion carried unanimously.

 

NEW BUSINESS

SUMMER PROJECTS

A list of summer projects was discussed and will be added to as the needs arise.

 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY FAIR BOOTH

Director Lindgren made a motion to have a booth at the Montgomery County Fair, July 16th-23rd, with a second by Director Vanderholm.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

OPEN ENROLLMENT

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve Barrett Horsely for open enrollment from Villisca into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Sorensen made a motion to approve Decklan Maranville for open enrollment from Villisca into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made a motion to approve Ashley Henneman for open enrollment from South Page into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve Makensey Henneman for open enrollment from South Page into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Weis. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Sorensen made a motion to approve Dacey Henneman for open enrollment from South Page into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made a motion to approve Jacob Scriver for open enrollment from Stanton into Red Oak for the 2016-2017 school year due to a move with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve Jared Scriver for open enrollment from Stanton into Red Oak for the 2016-2017 school year due to a move with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve Kaylnn Scriver for open enrollment from Stanton into Red Oak for the 2016-2017 school year due to a move with a second by Director Weis. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Lindgren made a motion to approve Owen Rhamy for open enrollment from Red Oak into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Weis. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Vanderholm made a motion to approve Ryan Baber for open enrollment from Red Oak into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Sorensen. The motion carried unanimously.

 

Director Weis made a motion to approve Scarlett Williams for open enrollment from Red Oak into Stanton for the 2017-2018 school year with a second by Director Vanderholm. The motion carried unanimously.

 

ADJOURNMENT

President Bates adjourned the meeting at 7:45 PM.  The next meeting of the board, which is a special meeting, will be held on May 25, 2017 at 5:30 PM.  The next regular meeting for the board is set for June 21, 2017 at 5:30 PM in the Board Room.
