2004 Football Cheerleaders

 Halftime Show

The high school cheerleaders led the elementary girls in several cheers at the halftime of one of the football games.  Cheers included "Get tuff," "We've got Spirit," and "Use that Viking Power."  The girls learned the cheers at after school camps that lasted a few hours for a few days.  At camp the girls also learned how to jump and kick.  The cheerleaders showed taught them how important it is to smile and yell loudly to pump up the crowd!  The girls also watched the high school cheerleaders perform some stunts and  dance moves as well.

The 2004 Stanton High School football cheerleaders are Front Row: Sophomore Tammy Hoffman, Senior Rachel Bruning, and Freshman Colleen Williams.  Second Row: Junior Jenny Hudson, Senior K.C. Williams, and Sophomore Heather Woodworth.

PUMP IT UP!

"Go big Vikes!  Go big Vikes!"  Every Friday night from September through October this year Stanton's football fans got pumped up by cheers like this one performed by Stanton's 2004 football cheerleaders.  Coached by Lisa Whigham, the 6-member squad went above and beyond what Stanton squads have done in the past to support their football team.

Even before the football guys broke a sweat on the field during their football camp last summer, the cheerleaders were hard at work.  The girls spent time working in the baseball concession stands and washing cars to earn money to go to cheerleading camp.  They attended a camp at Missouri Western College in St. Joseph, Missouri, during July where they learned important fundamentals such as how to properly perform jumps, stunts, kicks, and , most importantly, how to work together as a team.

When the school year started, things didn't slow down.  The cheerleaders would meet before school for practice a few days a week.  During these early morning hours the girls would plan the next pep rally, fundraiser, or spirit event and then work through 8-counts, cheers, jumps, kicks, and stunts in preparation for the next game.

Throughout the season several parents and fans encouraged the cheerleaders.  Mickey Anderson was one who took a major role in supporting the team.  He helped the cheerleaders pump up the crowd and the players by playing music over his sound system.  The cheerleaders in turn created routines to go along with the music.

It was the spectators' response to the cheerleaders and the action on the field that were vital to team morale.  The crowd's involvement played a major role in building excitement for what was happening during the game.  When the players heard the fans chanting words of encouragement, they were reminded that they had the support of family and friends in the community.  As a result, the team was inspired to continue to play its best.

Even after the football season for Stanton ended, the cheerleaders' work didn't stop.  K.C. Williams and Jenny Hudson participated in the Iowa Cheer Honor Squad.  They met with over a hundred other cheerleaders on November 14, 2004, at Southeast Polk High and then again on November 19 at the Uni-Dome/PEC where they practiced from 8:30in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon.  Iowa Cheer Honor Participants performed a routine at the 2A, 3A, and 4A State football games at the UNI-Dome on November 20.  After the third performance they received medals for their participation.

No pom-poms have been stored in the closet yet.  These girls worked equally hard throughout basketball season.  They entered the gym every game with new cheers and renewed spirit to lead the crowd in cheering their team on to victory!

All fired up

"Cheer as hard as you can, be the best you can at what you do because remember if you don't think you're good there's always a little girl looking up to you thinking she wants to be like you."
