Junior Vikes Showing Improvement

With the extra week of practice between games, we have had time to add new skills and sharpen a few of the basics of the game.  We have done a lot of work on blocking and tackling through a variety of drills.  I feel we are growing in confidence and becoming more and more anxious to hit someone other than our own teammates.  The best part of the growth I have seen is the depth we are creating.  We are now much better prepared to rotate players more frequently and into more than one position.

Thanks to coach Lura’s trip to Villisca on Monday, we were also able to get a look at some game tape of Essex/South Page.  They are very big and have couple of guys with break-away speed.  They scored over 30 points against the same Villisca team we scored 28 points against that included a blocked punt for a touchdown.  Our offense cannot afford to turn the ball over against a high scoring team like that!!  We’ll have our work cut out for us.

The team seems focused and ready for a physical game on Monday.

We are LIVE!

The school’s online broadcasting has been in much higher demand this year.  In fact, the last junior high football game was viewable through our school’s website.  We will be broadcasting again this coming Monday night.  If you have family or friends who may be interested in watching, all they need to do is following the link under “Upcoming Events” on the school’s homepage.  Also, I have posted the junior high football team introduction video.  It playing right now along with other the other fall sports teams and cheerleaders.

NEEDED:  Game Day Helpers

First, a big “Thank You” to those of you who have already helped on the sidelines with only a moment’s notice.  I have not succeeded in recruiting reliable helpers who are not already involved in other extra curricular activities.  This upcoming Monday is no different.  As of Friday morning, I had 3 maybe’s.  My translation is: zero help for a chain gang.  If anyone would like to volunteer, I would really appreciate it.  I feel bad having parents step in to fill the void when you could be just enjoying the game from the sidelines or the bleachers.

ELIGIBILITY Update

Mid-term has come and gone, and by Monday game time, we should be 12 players strong again.  Luckily we had an extra week to recover.  Everyone needs to stay on top of turning in assignments on time in order for the team to be as prepared as possible.  Coach Lura and myself will continue to remind them that academics come first, and if they need to miss practice in order to get help from a teacher—that is ok!  We’d like our athletes to make every effort to stay on top of their assignments to avoid anymore practices with less than 100% participation.

AM Conditioning

Wow, what a change has taken place in our team’s strength and conditioning.  Parents and players, you should be proud.  Those participating in the morning fitness workouts have shown dramatic change.   I was amazed the other day when they started commenting on how much weight they have lost since the beginning of the season.  As we have become stronger, we have also grown in confidence and aggression.  I really think you’ll notice a difference this coming Monday’s game, especially in our level of hitting.  We have literally beat each other up in practice the last couple of weeks.  There have been some great hits, great blocks, stars,  stingers, even some good bleeding, and whole lot of bruises.
