CLASS ACTIVITIES
FFA District Contest Results
Congratulations to all the FFA members who attended the SW District FFA Convention and contests held in Harlan last Saturday. We had three individuals who advanced from the sub district contest held two weeks ago in Corning. Ethan Lantz received a gold in Ag Sales and will be able to compete in State competition in April. Keegan Johnson and Casey Elwood also received gold but due to not having facilities for welding at state, will not advance. They both received the second gold in their respective contests of oxyacetylene welding and arc welding. Seth Johnson and Jordan Williams served as chapter delegates and also participated in the Farm Business Management Test along with Brent Hanson and Austin Palmquist. All students represented Stanton very well.

All School Play
A headline in the state newspaper reads, “Annual Fishing Tournament Expecting Record Number of Female Participants.” This news is great for women who love the sport of fishing. It’s even better news for men who love the sport of “picking up chicks.” When Brad and his buddies, Geordie and Max hear the news, they pack their backpacks and head to Weiss Lake where the tournament is being held. Because the guys know that the women at the tournament will be impressed with men who exude expert fishing knowledge, they conduct research by picking up a couple of fishing magazines at the local 7-11. They figure by the time the “chicks” find out the men know nothing about fishing they will have already won them over with their “charm and animal magnetism.” But when one of the men’s inept cousin tags along and accidentally spills the beans to the women about the men’s intentions, the weekend becomes more than anyone bargained for. And then Brad’s fiancée shows up. The women have a plan to put the ego filled fellows in their place – and it’s not going to be pretty. Add in a fishing spy and you’ve got a hilarious comedy.
The play will be performed on Friday, March 19th beginning at 7 PM. Please come and enjoy a fun filled evening. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.
Swing Choir Competes In Contest This Saturday
The High School choir will compete in the Bellevue East High School Show Choir contest on this Saturday, March 13th, in the East high school gymnasium in Bellevue, NE. They will perform at 11:20 a.m. and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. There are six other schools in their class so the competition will be strong as they are all larger schools. Be sure to get there in plenty of time as they close the doors for each performance. The school address is 1401 High School Drive.
Artist-in-Residence Visits
Patrick Lally, Artist-in-Residence for the Corning Fine Arts Center visited Stanton School on Tuesday, March 2. Pat told students about his background in ceramics at the University of Montana, and his work at the University of Iowa earning his MFA degree. Pat gave demonstrations in clay on the potter’s wheel and with hand building techniques. Pat demonstrated several shapes for pots. He let the kids help add textures, and he demonstrated making and pulling handles and forming lids. The art students from fourth grade through high school were able to watch and learn. One student said he made it look easy and another said it looks very hard. Thank you Pat.
Thank You
The 3rd grade class wishes to thank the Rogers family for the donated books to our class library! The many bags of books are in excellent shape, most are accelerated reading books, and they are from popular authors.

FROM THE
SUPERINTENDENT’S DESK
Responding to State Aid Reduction
This is intended to keep you - the community members, taxpayers, and staff members - informed. The good news is that over the last several years Stanton School has been able to purchase several new school buses, school vans, update some of our technology, update classrooms, install hallway carpet, install K-12 classroom air conditioning, and install a new school roof. Since the Stanton Community School District updated its Revenue Purpose Statement in 2004, we were able to pay for these items with the One Cent Sales Tax revenue. This in turn kept our property taxes low per $1,000 valuation compared to many other districts and also took financial pressure off the General Operating Fund, which pays for salaries, benefits, and annual fixed costs.
The bad news is that the Governor, as you probably already know, has made an across-the-board cut in state aid to schools. The 10% reduction represents $95,929 that our school will not receive beginning November 2009. We have absorbed several state aid reductions in the past and less funding from the state, especially over the last six years, because of declining enrollment.
The Stanton Community School District is not in a dire financial position and we do not intend to be there. However, in order to maintain adequate revenue and funding for our district we must continue to be fiscally responsible, continue to make the tough decisions, be proactive and make selective reductions in annual costs, and share programs/staff where and when we can.
Additionally, we will have to consider making up some of the state aid reductions and declining enrollment by approving a Cash Reserve Levy, which will increase property taxes. The combination of these things will hopefully increase revenue enough so we do not have to borrow money, we do not have to make a lot of reductions in a single year, and we can keep our school district viable for the future.
These issues will be discussed at monthly board meetings over the next several months. Please feel free to make your thoughts, opinions, suggestions known to the superintendent and/or Board of Directors of Stanton Community School.
OPEN ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS
Parents/guardians considering the use of the open enrollment option to enroll their child/ren in another public school district in the state of Iowa should be aware of the following dates:
March 1, 2010—Last date for regular open enrollment requests for the 2010-2011 school year for students in grades 1-12.
September 1, 2009—Last date for open enrollment requests for entering kindergarten students and those students falling under the “good cause” definition for the 2009-10 school year.
Parents/guardians of open enrolled students whose income falls below 160% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for transportation assistance. This may be in the form of actual transportation or in the form of a cash stipend.
Parents should be aware that open enrollment may result in the loss of athletic eligibility.
For further details, contact the school office at 712-829-2162.
