In 2006, the Elks National
Foundation awarded its last Eagle Scout Award. The Board of Trustees
decided to discontinue funding for the two Scouts scholarship programs, in favor
of increasing funding for our own
Most Valuable Student program. By
doing so, all Boy Scouts that meet the Most Valuable Student eligibility
criteria are able to apply.
The National Eagle Scout Association continues to offers academic

Criteria for Eligibility:
1. Students must be residents of Iowa.
2. Students must be admissible to Iowa State University.
3. Students must demonstrate financial eligibility.
4. Students must have faced challenges of personal and/or financial hardship.
5. Students must possess the potential to succeed.
Application procedures:
1. Complete and mail the application for the Hixson Opportunity Award by
February 1.
2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1
at www.FAFSA.ed.gov.
3. Complete the Iowa State University admission process by February 1.
4. Submit a recommendation from a guidance counselor, teacher, or community
leader that specifically discusses your qualifications based on the Criteria for
Eligibility.
Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship
– due February 1
-have a minimum of a
28 ACT
-rank in the top 10% of the student’s high school graduating class
-be a legal Iowa resident
-be scheduled to graduate this spring
-have completed 3 years of science including biology, chemistry and physics; 2
years of the same foreign language; 4 years of English; 3 years of social
studies; and 3 years of math beyond general math and pre-algebra
-have applied or been accepted at an accredited postsecondary school
Masonic Scholarship
- due February 1
-Approximately 60 scholarships in the amount of $2,000 will be awarded
-Must be a senior planning to attend an accredited institution which provides
(1) a two or four year college program or (2) vocational training
-Need not have a Masonic connection
-The principal criterion is service to school and community with special
emphasis upon leadership roles in these areas.
-An applicant’s record, communication skills, and need for financial assistance
are also considered carefully as is an evaluation of the applicant by a school
official.
-The
organization, appearance, and completeness of the application itself is also a
factor considered in the selection process.
-The
Scholarship Selection Committee will select a number of finalists who will be
asked to appear before the committee for a personal interview.

This program is for U.S.
high school seniors in Cargill communities planning to pursue a two- or
four-year degree in any major. Applicants must visit their local Cargill
facility or subsidiary and obtain a signature from a Cargill manager on their
application. The Cargill Community Scholarship Program awards 350 one-time

Tobacco Free Scholarship – March 1
“SMOKING KILLS” Education Awareness Inc. will offer a scholarship to one Montgomery County tobacco-free senior with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The student must be preparing to enter a two or four year-college or technical school. The county’s winner of the scholarship will have actively demonstrated support of a tobacco-free lifestyle. Participating locally in “SMOKING KILLS” Education Awareness activities and anti-tobacco activities will be of benefit. Proof of activities will be required. A typed essay of 750-1,000 words telling of the candidate’s reasons for being tobacco –free and of the consequences of tobacco use for both user and the non-user will also be required. Submission of the essay gives permission for publication in local media. Awards will be given at the winner’s Awards Assembly in May of 2008. John Olson Memorial Scholarship

John Olson was a
vital, contributing member of the Stanton Community. He was active in community

Stephanie (Peterson) and Christopher Stein Scholarship was established in the
spring of 2001 in memory of Stephanie (Peterson) and Christopher Stein.
Stephanie was a 1991 graduate of Stanton High School. Stephanie and Christopher
were 1996 graduates of Iowa State University.

water conservation can maintain or improve the quality of life, for us the
people as well as wildlife. You can write about habitat and preservation for
wildlife, your personal experiences, or your ideas to improve methods of land
and wildlife conservation.

focus of the scholarship is to promote learning in specific fields of study
related to the sciences. The primary emphasis in selection of the final
applicant will not be placed on academics or academic standing but more on the

skills of the applicant in the chosen field of study.

Ashley and Brooke Maley Memorial Scholarship was established in the spring of
2003 in memory of Ashley and Brooke Maley who were students of the Stanton
Community School.
